Prologue[]

Esteria- 7 years past

Esteria flew behind her parents, gracefully twirling through the air. “Woo-hoo!” She called, her small voice ringing through the open night sky. Her father laughed.

“Someone’s having fun,” He said, smiling.

Esteria smiled back at him and admired the twinkling scales along her wings. This was the first time she’d ever been outside, and she now knew how much she’d missed out. The sky was so open, as if it went on forever. She’d never felt so free in her entire life!

Esteria longed to fly faster, dive down to the ocean as fast as she could, really fly for the first time in her life. She looked at her mother hopefully.

“Go on, my little starlight.”

Esteria nodded a thanks at her mother, smiling wide as she dove beneath the clouds. SHe tucked her wings in close to her sides and twirled, before unfurling her obsidian-black wings at the last second to catch herself. Her legs skimmed the cool water. She flapped her wings again to fly just above the water, towards the horizon.

Esteria raised her wings, readying to fly upwards and to her parents again, when a rope net bound her wings back to her sides.

Esteria screamed in pain, as her net was dragged aboard a ship.

“Esteria!” Her father’s voice screamed.

“Dad-” Esteria tried calling, but before she could finish, a muzzle was shoved onto her snout, clamping her mouth shut. Esteria struggled with all her might, and her parents roared from the sky. They dove down from the clouds, and the humans on the ship screamed orders at each other,

“Ready the arrows!’

“Get the nets!”

Esteria was shoved into a cage, and a human began fumbling with the lock to try and shut it, but her mother’s Plasma Blast hit the human before he could finish. Esteria ran out of her cage and to her mother.

“Esteria, listen to me.” Her mother’s voice said firmly. “I’m going to take this muzzle off, and I want you to fly straight back home. Me and your father can take care of ourselves, I promise. Now, I need you to promise me you’ll go home.”

Esteria’s heart raced, and she nodded at her mother. The older Night Fury tore off Esteria's muzzle, and Esteria immediately took to the sky.

“I love you!” Esteria turned around to respond to her mother’s cry of love to watch a hunter shove a spear through her scales.

“Mom!” She called, ready to dive.

“Go home, Esteria, right now!” Her father called, his voice full of grief. Esteria hesitated.

“Dad, but I can help!”

“No!” He cried. Esteria watched the hunters chain his wings down and drag him across the boat.

“DAD!”

It was too late. Esteria’s parents were gone. Now she was alone, orphaned.

And it was my fault. They saved me. I shouldn’t have listened to my mother. I should have fought! Esteria fought back her cries of grief. Never again will I make this mistake. I will fight and be bold, I will be smart. And I will avenge my parents.

Chapter One[]

Esteria

It was cold in the cavern that Esteria lay in. She usually liked the cold, but today she just felt so alone and empty. The other young dragons lie in the cave beside her, awaiting the dragon families that were going to come choose their adoptive children.  Don’t get your hopes up. No one likes a teenager.  Esteria told herself as families entered the cave.

Family after family of all kinds of dragons came into the cave, talking to each young dragon to decide who would fit best into their family.

After what felt like days but was merely a matter of hours, a family of Light Furies came into the cave. Esteria realized with a gasp that this was the Royal Family, King Arne, Queen Esme, and Princess Astelle.

“Hello,” the Queen said gently. Esteria looked at her. She pushed out her side spines and stood tall, forming herself into the most regal pose she could manage. Just be yourself, Este. If they’re going to adopt you they’d like to know the real you.

Princess Astelle walked towards Esteria. “Hello!” She said brightly.

“Your Majesties,” Esteria said bowed low.

“You don’t have to do that anymore,” King Arne’s voice said, “You’re one of us now.”

Esteria shot up, shocked. The Royal Family had just said that they were adopting her! Esteria felt giddiness boiling up within her chest, she wanted to scream with excitement. But bottled down the feelings and gave a happy smile to the King.

“S-so you’re-” Esteria said.

“Yes,” the Queen said happily. “We’re adopting you, my dear!”

Esteria couldn’t wrap her mind around the fact that the Royal Family had just waltzed in and adopted her without even looking at any of the others. Esteria had many flaws, all of the kids had told her so. She was too easily distracted, too weak, too small. Why in the world would they choose me, a Night Fury?

Esteria’s new family took off, leading her to the Royal Cavern known as ‘The Castle.’ The Hidden World was dimming as nightfall approached. Esteria had the distinct feeling that she wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.

Esteria touched down onto the mossy ground of The Castle, and Astelle motioned for Esteria to follow her to the sleeping caves. They ducked into a small, comfortable cavern that was perfect for sleep, and the two dragons curled up on the floor.

“Astelle?” Esteria said timidly.

The Light Fury sleepily turned her head to Esteria. “Yes, Esteria?”

Esteria gulped. “Wh-why did your family choose me?”

The Light Fury hesitated, considering what she should say. “Because we connected with you, we saw that you needed someone, that you needed us.” She said.

Esteria took in the answer. She had desperately wanted a family, or even just a friend to talk to. Astelle seemed so kind. Though Esteria didn’t know her yet, she did hope to become close friends with her. “Well, thank you.” She said at last. With that, both girls drifted off into sleep.

Chapter Two[]

Esteria

Esteria woke up early the next morning after minimal sleep. She looked around, trying to figure out where she was.

Then she remembered what had happened. It wasn’t a dream. The royal family adopted me, me! I’m a princess! Esteria jumped a little as Astelle stirred and stretched her wings.

“Morning Esteria,” Astelle yawned.

“Hello Astelle,” Esteria said quietly.

“How did you sleep last night?”

Esteria hesitated. “I slept… fine.”

“I hope that’s a good finel.”

“It is, I guess.” Esteria said. Esteria felt odd standing beside a Light Fury, who was supposedly her sister. “Why choose a Night Fury like me? Won’t that ruin your family’s ‘pure’ reputation, all royals following the bloodline?”

“I don’t think so.” Astelle responded, unsure of how to answer, “My, and now your, great-great-great-great-grandfather, Toothless, was a Night Fury. I think it’s cool that you’re a Night Fury. Maybe you’ll make Night Furies more honored.”

Esteria smiled at Astelle proudly, holding her head high as she exited the cavern. Princess Esteria, that has a nice ring to it!

Esteria followed her new sister down to the Breakfast Hall, to find King Arne and the High General Regnfall.

“Greetings Princess Astelle and Princess Esteria.” the Deadly Nadder said with a gentle authority in his voice as he bowed.

“Hello, General Regnfall,” Astelle said politely. Esteria looked at her new father for direction. King Arne motioned for Esteria to copy Astelle.

“Hi General Re-gen-fall,” Esteria said awkwardly, mispronouncing his name.

“Sorry sir.” Esteria added quickly.

“It’s okay. Lots of dragons have trouble pronouncing my name. It’s Reg-n-fall.” The General smiled at Esteria and melted all feelings of awkwardness away from her. Esteria smiled back.

“Well, I’m new to this whole thing,” Esteria told General Regnfall.

“I completely understand.” General Regnfall said kindly.

“Girls, General Regnfall is looking for a new commanding scout to join his hunting corp. because one of them left,” Queen Emse explained, “Do you know anyone who would be a good replacement?”

“No, I don’t think so but, I’d love to!” Esteria said as she searched her mind for anyone who would be a good scout commander, other than herself. Everyone, except Astelle, started laughing and General Regnfall smiled at Esteria that made her relax and hope that maybe she could become Scout Commander.

King Arne and General Regnfall started talking again. Queen Emse walked over to Esteria.

“Good morning Esteria!” her new mom said. Esteria smiled at her. Emse looked at her new daughter realizing there was something new in her eyes. Yesterday, her eyes were dull and seemed far away. Today, however, her eyes were bright and full of life. She even walked differently. Instead of dragging her feet, she pranced in graceful, even regal, prance. She smiled wholeheartedly instead of weakly like she did the night before. Esteria was changing before their very eyes.

“Good morning,” Esteria said, her brilliant blue eyes gleaming as light from surrounding crystals reflected off of them.

“How are you feeling about being here?” Emse asked.

“It’s… new and weird,” Esteria said. “Never thought I’d be here.”

“That’s okay,” Emse said, “It can take a while getting used to being royalty. Trust me, I understand.”

“Wait! You weren’t always royalty?” Esteria gasped.

“No, but the King has. He chose me out of a million other Light Furies and Night Lights.” Emse whispered to her new daughter.

“Really? Wow,” Esteria said, amazed that her new father chose her new mom out of many others.

“Yes and now I have you and Astelle as my princesses,” Emse said.

“Why did you choose me out of all the others? There were Light Furies and Night Lights but, you chose me, a Night Fury,” Esteria asked.

“Well,” Emse said as she worked out how to answer, “When we were looking for another daughter we had heard of Light Furies and Night Lights but, none of them seemed quite right for our family. And then we heard that there was a New Night Fury who needed adoption. We learned that she was 14, like Astelle, and needed a family who loved her. We knew the second we learned about you that you belonged here, in our family.”

“Really?” Esteria asked.

“Really.” Astelle said firmly, her tone proving to Esteria that she meant it. This was her home. She was a princess of the Hidden World.

After a large breakfast of over 10 different types of fish, Astelle beckoned for Esteria to join her in exploring.
